2 Days after Surgery - A Whole New Lease on LIfe

July 28, 2012
Well, it's over, I finally did it.  I must say the last couple of days has been a challenge.  I do not like to be cooped up in bed and I do not like feeling nauseous, but after that surgery it's a given.  You feel more sick from the anesthesia and the air they pump into your body to see all your organs than the actual surgery itself. It's a non-stop gas attack that is the uncomfortable part.  Then the nausea that you combat as you come off the effects of the anesthesia.

However, I was told that my surgery only took 1hr. 45 mins and was a big success.  The normal surgeries take anywhere from 2-3hrs, so I feel rather fortunate.  Also, I have not taken one ounce of pain medication since I have left the recovery room.  This apparently is not normal either.  I don't know if it's because I have a low pain threshold or because the gas and nausea bothered me more.  As I type this I have a very dull pain in my left side from one of the incisions but otherwise just a bit of tenderness.  It's really amazing!  If you saw my stomach right now you'd see 6 small one-inch incisions that are scattered to the right and left of my tummy, but not at all like you'd expect.  It looks like tape on me and that's really it.

My focus right now is to not be afraid to eat.  I just went on liquids as I left he hospital on the second day.  I had to get moving and had four walks before I left the hospital.  My best advice, for anyone who has this surgery is to get up and WALK!  You feel so much better and it helps move that gassy feeling out of you a bit more.  The nurses were shocked that I didn't hit that pain button not even once.  I am a control freak and I do not like not being in control, so for me if I had been in any pain, I would have gladly taken it, but at the same time I wasn't feeling pain so why bother? I am rather surprised by the lack of pain, actually.

The next couple of days I am going to try and follow the liquid diet for now as I don't feel I'm quite ready for the pureed foods quite yet.  Can you believe that my stomach is actually only the size of a walnut now?  It is hard for me to believe because at the moment I feel pretty normal.  I do get tired easily and spend a lot o time in bed, but I think that is your body recovering from the surgery itself.

I will update in a couple of days though, keep my progress posted on here as I am sure those people out there that are thinking of this surgery can see what it's like.  Would I still go back and do it all again? Most definitely, even though right now I haven't seen the effects just fully yet, I know it'll be worth it!

Until next time...
